Project Hail Mary Review

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.
Or does he?

I was never any good at science in school. The terminology, the equations, and the intricate details always left me staring blankly at the wall, wishing I could be doing anything else. And since Project Hail Mary is dubbed Science Fiction, I was hesitant to start this book. However, I found that while many scientific aspects flew over my head, the author's skillful storytelling and the compelling characters kept me engaged. This book absolutely blew me away! I've never read a book that takes place in space, and the classic 'one man against the universe to save humanity' trope instantly intrigued me.

The story follows Ryland Grace, who wakes on a spaceship surrounded by his dead crew with no memories of who he is or how he ended up in space. The book alternates between the past and present as Ryland regains his memories and attempts to save humanity, despite it being a suicide mission.

I absolutely loved being inside Ryland's mind. He's an amazing narrator with a dark and witty sense of humor that perfectly balances with the story's darker elements. Project Hail Mary was a hidden gem that I didn't expect to fall in love with. It's a unique and complex read, full of plot twists you will never see coming, and it will definitely stimulate your intellect.

Andy Weir must be some kind of genius to have come up with this story. I never knew what was going to happen next, and it took me on an emotional rollercoaster through space. I loved this book and would definitely recommend reading it, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone and experiencing the emotional journey it takes you on.
